- Clean the rug quickly
In order to remove pet stains, a quick reaction is the best. The biological components of the "accident" will work quickly to cause discoloration, possible staining and odor. The longer this is left on the carpet or flooring, the harder it will be for you to get it out and prevent staining. - Clean the rug effectively
Here are some basic steps for a beginning level of cleaning. A great tool to have on hand for carpet spills is a WET/DRY vacuum like a ShopVac or other brand. What follows are general suggestions and are not intended to solve every problem. Please understand that you attempt any of the suggestions at your own risk.- First, remove any loose debris carefully, without rubbing it into the carpeting or flooring. Try using a putty knife or old spatula to get beneath the debris.
- If possible or available, use a WET/DRY vacuum (extraction) to remove liquids, otherwise use a dry terry cloth to blot the stain to remove any liquid possible.
- Use clear, cool water and spray, sponge or carefully pour it on the affected area. A solution of 50% water to 50% vinegar is better for urine problems. Be very careful to avoid overwetting the carpet. We DO NOT advocate the use of any bleaches or harsh detergents.
- Immediately vacuum (remember with a WET VAC machine only!) out the wetted area (or blot the area with a dry, clean terry cloth) to help remove the stain.
- Repeat as necessary and finish with clear water rinse and extraction/blotting.
- Finish by smoothing the area in the same direction of the knap and if possible use a fan to help dry the area.
- It still won't come out!
